This is the 2020 Remaster of 'Bloody El' - “Bloody El” starts with a tape pop, it plays like a cassette. Followed by Malcolm X explaining why there’s so much self hate in the black community. When I was 17, I had a run in with a different cop every day for a week. At the same spot. Driving to my gfs house. I would later write “Beautiful White” which is pretty much my feelings of being around law enforcement and authority figures.
“They call me lazy call me crazy/repurposed a slave ship and call it my fair lady” is a line in the first verse of “Pounds & Francs”, which begins to explain why I feel more comfortable in Europe than I ever did here.
“You Don’t Want Real Love” is a thinly veiled swipe at this bs music industry and how it stifles artist creativity. I get it you wanna make it by any means. But does it ever feel hollow?
The real magic is in “Graves of New Orleans” which details Katrina, and the government response to black communities in crisis. AKA the infamous “no response”.
“Bloody El” is about all the blood my people have spilled for an inch. It’s about the promise, the 40 acres. It’s about saying f*** it and forging your own path!
